Destination Unknown

20 years ago, I started a second career as a motorcycle journalist, and I’ve been lucky enough to see many of the beautiful places in the world and publishing stories and photos of my adventures. I’ve started documenting my bicycle adventures in a similar fashion, and will be sharing those stories here. Please join me.

  • The Cloisters, NYC, originally uploaded by john m flores. Via Flickr:with the Pentax K-01. There’s something about this shot that I keep coming back to. I think it’s the fact that there’s a lot of detail in the shadows – that they haven’t been pushed to black. I can do that in post if I…

  • The Unicorn Room at the Cloisters, NYC, originally uploaded by john m flores. Via Flickr:with the Pentax K-01 and the DA21mm F3.2 Limited. ISO6400, 1/20s. There wasn’t a lot of light in this room, but the high ISO performance plus Shake Reduction helped me get the shot. Viewed 100%, there’s some noise that should be…

  • I bought the K-01 for two things – the Sony sensor (same as the K-5), and the quiet shutter. I typically shoot candid photojournalist style, so I need cameras that work well in low light and don’t make too much noise. I had been considering the Panasonic GX1 or Olympus E-P3 since I already have…

  • Inside Looking Out, originally uploaded by john m flores. Via Flickr:The Cloisters Museum, NYC, with the Pentax K-01. This is straight out of the camera. Impressive dynamic range, especially considering that this is iSO1600.

  • Waiting, originally uploaded by john m flores. Via Flickr:At The Cloisters Museum, NYC, with the Pentax K-01. ISO1600

  • Pentax K-01 at the Cloisters. In-camera HDR sample, originally uploaded by john m flores. Via Flickr:This is my first time really using the K-01 “in anger” as they say, not just fiddling at home with the cats or taking random shots. We went to the Cloisters because we had not been there before, but I…

  • Lifelike busts at The Cloisters Museum, NYC, originally uploaded by john m flores. Via Flickr:Each has a different expression, which makes for such an interesting series.

  • Street shooting at the Cloisters with the Pentax K-01, originally uploaded by john m flores. Via Flickr:I haven’t read about the history of the Cloisters yet, but it’s a beautiful little building, a mix of medium-sized exhibit spaces and formal outdoor garden spaces. As such, the light source and levels are constantly changing. I relied…

  • Detail from “The Lamentation”, originally uploaded by john m flores. Via Flickr:I’d never spent much time contemplating medieval religious art before. I am struck by the wonderful artistry and craftsmanship by much of the art here. This piece, “The Lamentation”, is a wonderfully expressive piece, one of my favorites of the whole place. I could…
