Following Wyman’s Tire Tracks. Update: Ogden Utah

2016-07-18

It’s about a week into the trip and I have ridden from Lotta’s Fountain in San Francisco (the only source of water for the city after the 1906 earthquake), across California’s fertile Central Valley, up and over the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains, and across the broad expanse of northern Nevada. Nevada has surprised me most of all with its stark, barren beauty, a subtle mix of golds, greens, and reds splashed upon an undulating landscape. It’s easy to miss if you’re buzzing along I-80, but I’ve explored as many side roads and small towns as I can and seen another… Continue reading Following Wyman’s Tire Tracks. Update: Ogden Utah

Talking about George A Wyman with Motorcycles & Misfits

2016-07-15

Right after I picked up the Zero DSR from Zero Motorcycles in Scotts Valley, California, I visited the good folks at the Motorcycles and Misfits podcast to talk about my trip. It was a hoot – they have a community garage where they wrench but once a week they turn it into a little podcast studio. There’s a lot of laughing and inside jokes and just a good time. My interview starts at around the 56:00 minute mark. Thanks to “Electric” Terry Hershner for meeting me at Zero and giving me a charging tutorial and also connecting me with the… Continue reading Talking about George A Wyman with Motorcycles & Misfits

Q: Who is this man?

2016-07-04

A: George A. Wyman, who in 1903 became the first person to cross the USA on a motorcycle. The motorcycle was a 200cc California, and it’s little more than a bicycle with a small motor attached. Look closely and you can see the pedals and chain! Good thing – Wyman needed to pedal more than once, which was ok since Wyman was a bicycle racer. As far as motorcycles go, this was state of the art in 1903 (the same year that #HarleyDavidson was founded and just two years after #IndianMotorcycle was founded), with a leather belt drive, leading link… Continue reading Q: Who is this man?

Do you know this man?

2016-06-30

Time for a new adventure! But first, a little history…Do you know this man? If you ride motorcycles, watched Long Way Round and like pointing your bike towards the horizon, you should. This guy is our Ferdinand Magellan, our Charles Lindbergh, our Lewis and our Clarke. This guy is our Homer…and I don’t mean Simpson. In May of 1903 he set off from San Francisco, pointed his 200cc, 1.25 horsepower California motorcycle eastward, and did not stop until he arrived in New York City 50 days later, becoming the first person to cross the United States on a motorcycle. Do… Continue reading Do you know this man?

On the Road Again

2015-06-05

Back on the road for my next RoadRUNNER Magazine assignment. This time I’m exploring the Catskills Mountains of New York on a Royal Enfield Continental GT. This is an authentic vintage cafe racer, not some modern day bike with antique lipstick. 500cc of low compression power. Less than 30HP. Top speed of…who cares, it’s so uncomfortable at 70mph that I don’t want to shake it to bits. But the bike does have its charms, making me feel like Steve McQueen being one of them. Along for the ride is a minimalist photography kit-Pentax K-3 with just the FA 31mm F1.9… Continue reading On the Road Again

Story in the Round: Running a 5K with the Ricoh Theta M15

2015-05-22

My birthday present to myself this year is the Ricoh Theta M15, a unique 360 degree camera. I’m hoping to use it on my motorcycle trips and running adventures. It arrived the same day I was planning to run a local 5k, so I thought that I’d give it a shakedown test… After signing up and getting my race packet I stopped for a photo with Scooter, the mascot of the Somerset Patriots, our local minor league baseball team. 5K in town. With Somerset Patriots’ Sparky #theta360 – Spherical Image – RICOH THETA     [Play around with the image-drag… Continue reading Story in the Round: Running a 5K with the Ricoh Theta M15
